static when I push record button in audacity

I have Audacity 1.2.5 on a Macbook pro 10.4.11. I have been using it for a year and a half to record old LPs . From the beginning there have been times when I push the record button and get lots of static. Usually, I have been able to close out that file, and start a new one that works OK. In the last week the problem has become permanent. Even when the record player is not hooked up the static is there so it isn't the player. Any ideas?

Give a try at audacity 1.3.12... http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac

Eventhough it's labelled beta, it's usually more stable on macs than 1.2.x versions...

You don't need to delete the old version, you can have both, but only run one at a time
