tunnel effect in plyback - Windows 7?
Hi - have just got a new computer running Windows 7 and downloaded new version Audacity - I know this must be something simple, but cannot get rid of the tunnel sound when recording directly from the net. Have tried a personal "voice recording" with internal mic - and and this is fine (once I unticked all the effects options). Actually tried downloading the previous version again - and the same tunnel effect coming through. Is this some setting on the computer I need to change? Can anyone help here? Thanks!

Uncheck "Software Playthrough" in the Transport Menu in 1.3.12.joshbc wrote:Hi - have just got a new computer running Windows 7 and downloaded new version Audacity - I know this must be something simple, but cannot get rid of the tunnel sound when recording directly from the net. If that does not help, set the Audacity project rate to the same rate as the "default format" for the recording and playback devices. You can change the default format in the Windows system mixer (step 7 here). In Audacity, set the "host" to "Windows DirectSound" at Edit > Preferences: Devices.
If even that does not help, attach a 30 second MP3 that lets us hear what you mean. Click on "Upload attachment" underneath the Preview/Post Message buttons.

do you know for sure the thing you are downloading does not actually sound like that?
tell them to stand nearer their microphone to make it better.
do you have any skype or other programs running?
be sure all effects, echo cancellation, etc. are off.
be sure to keep all the processing effects off on realtek or whatever sound card you use.

I would surmise too that you have an "environment" effect turned on in your sound card, assuming the audio did not sound like that originally.

Re: tunnel effect in plyback - Windows 7?
Thanks Gale - OK - got the environment sound settings done! All good - for some reason the Realtek environment effects setting was on 'sewer pipe!'
The only challenge I have left is - I cannot seem to put the right settings in the audacity "device" settings to record from the "internal" sound card directly - my new toshiba quosmio laptop - running windows 7 - has a built in mic below the keyboard face which audacity is recording from (ie. all exteranl sounds) - I can't seem to turn it off. (perfect recordings with a headphone/mic BTW) - have tried every combination in the device settings and nothing works for me - and cannot find how to turn the mic off on the top of the actual laptop. Have tried going into RealTek setup and disabling the mic from there - however -then Audacity comes up with an error notice and cannot record at all - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as always! Not all sound cards will let you record what is playing on your computer (Usually called "Stereo Mix" or sometimes "What U Hear").
Sometimes, even when they do, the settings are well hidden in the Windows control panel.
Have a read of this article from the Wiki, and see if it helps.
