preserve the envelope?

I can't help thinking that the poster was looking for a little blue radio button to push that would transfer the envelope.

No there is no button, but it would be a cool feature, and probably not too difficult to implement. I've frequently found the envelope tool a bit underpowered. If I want to use a fade in, or fade out that follows a convex curve (the fade too or from silence is rapid, but slower as it approaches full volume) it requires quite a few control points to be set - it would be handy to be able to save custom envelopes.

I once complained that the gray value modification tools in Corel Draw were extremely painful to use. You had to move each and every graphical control point and try to make them look good--all manually. I went on at some length how I wanted it to work, completely unaware that I was describing exactly how the same tool worked in Photoshop. Move one point with your mouse and all the other points in the whole curve adjusted themselves for the best and most pleasant and graceful product. The difference is stunning.

(And why Photoshop still costs US$500.)
