Audacity does not run! Opens a "temporarytopwindow"

Post by Dancingpants » Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:22 pm

I have been using Audacity for more than a year, and it has always worked on my current laptop running windows Vista.
However, I recently installed FL Studio onto my computer and now whenever I open Audacity, a window entitled "temporarytopwindow" opens up and then stops responding.
I neeed my Audacity! I have uninstalled/reinstalled/rebooted, all those standard procedures and it still won't open.
I'm going to try uninstalling FL Studio and whatnot next, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this problem.

Unless you can point me to more information, FL Studio is not rated for Vista, so it wouldn't surprise me that it's causing troubles.

If you haven't figured it out yet, I have. You need to uninstall the VST Bridge, browse to C:/Program Files/Audacity/Plug-Ins/VST Bridge/ and run the uninstaller. Then launch Audacity, it should work then. Hope that helps.

Hi,

I am having this same problem, except I no longer have FL installed, I had a demo version I think, anyway I would like to use VSTs in Audacity, but I can't because of this "temporarytopwindow" thing. Is there a way round it? BTW I'm using XP.

Failing that, anyone know a good free de esser which is not a VST?

Thanks

Edit- Crap, just realized this is the wrong forum, I'm using 1.3.4beta. Will try 1.2 and see what happens...
Edit2- Nope, installed 1.2.6, still getting temporarytopwindow with the vst bridge. :(

My guess (and this is just an educated guess) is that FL has left some stuff behind. You could try searching the registry for any FL related stuff and removing it (make sure you make a backup copy of your registry).

I don't know of any LADSPA or Nyquist de-essers, but basically all a de-esser is, is a high frequency compressor.

The same effect can be produced if you make a duplicate copy of the track, and Eq it so that all frequencies except for the 4 kHz to 12 kHz band are reduced. Then Eq the original track so that the frequency band 4 kHz to 12 kHz is reduced.

By adjusting the levels of these two track, you should be able to make them sound just like the original (the duplicate track filling in the frequencies that have been reduced in the original)

Now run a compressor (such as SC4) on the duplicate track.

If you want something more simple, just use Eq to reduce the sibilance, or better still, try to avoid excessive sibilance when you make the original recording.

Thanks very much. I will get looking through the registry, I had a quick look and there was loads! I might try that trick, doesn't sound too hard. The vocals I have recorded aren't too bad though, especially considering it was just a mic in a barn! Cheers.
