Envelope Tool

Post by Charlie Nash » Tue May 25, 2010 1:39 am

I'm fairly new to both Audacity and to recording. However, reading the Tutorials and the Forum has allowed me to learn pretty fast. Initial recording efforts have been very satisfactory. I think that Audacity is an awesome program. One small thing that has me stumped, however, is how to cut off the Envelope Tool have you have finished editing with it. Cutting it on is as simple as a "click". How do you cut it off? Thanks.

You "turn off" the envelope by creating another point, and raising the level back up (or down) to where you had it set previously. I generally use two points each time I raise volume and then lower it, as it allows me to shape the transition a little more than an absolute on/off type of sound. This also allows you to evenly set the level between the two inner points at each end of the modified clip, which if you pay attention to the "lines" allows you to accurately set the volume on a consistant basis during the modified portion. If you only use one point, you are going to end up with a triangular wave form, that is either increasing or decreasing depending upon how you set the levels using the envelope tool. Hope this helps.
