Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Lame not working with Audacity on MAC

Post by deborahj » Sun Feb 03, 2008 3:51 am

I've read all the posts about LAME not working with Audacity ... that's my problem now.
I'm using Mac OS X - 10.3.9 466 MHz Power PC G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9) - I'm not as tech savvy as some of the others posting here so if anyone can just tell me which versions of which to download I'll start from the top. I've already downloaded Audacity 1.2.6 and LAME version: libmp3lame-osx-universal-3.97.zip - and Audactiy can not find the lib file - it's greyed out.
I'm only aware of having stuffitt and it all happens so fast I have no control over the download.....

thanks for any help.

If it's gray, you got either the wrong Audacity or the wrong lame library.

It will take me a bit to figure out what happened. OS-X 10.3 is Panther, right?

Right then.

You should have downloaded Audacity 1.2.6 which is the direct replacement for 1.2.4 which is the one I'm still running and probably shouldn't be.

audacity-macosx-ppc-1.2.6.dmg

That's the disk image file. You should be able to just click on that to decompress all the operating files. I personally create a fresh audacity folder on the desktop, drag it into /Applications, and then drag all the decompressed files over to it. That's a much neater install than the "official" one. Run Audacity right from there, or drag to the dock to create a shortcut.

You should download LameLib-Carbon.sit which is the lame Stuffit file that goes with the above Audacity. A simple Stuffit Expander should be available inside your Panther install. I think I put the lame file in the /Plug-Ins folder.

Hi Koz...
Having problems exporting files as mp3:
I'm running Leopard on Macbookpro. I downloaded Audacity 1.2.5 and libmp3lame-osx-universal-3.97. When exporting a file as mp3, I'm asked if I want to find the lame library (libmp3lame.dylib). It then opens a lib folder where no such file is found... When I take it to the proper file in my lame folder, I get the message: could not open encoding library....
What am I doing wrong? Is there something I'm missing out on.... a bummer... It took me long enough to sort out all the other nuisances! And now that everything works nearly as well as on pcs.... I get stuck with the mp3 exportation.... By the way, exporting a file in wav works fine... But so heavy!!! Thanks for your help... once again!

I had that problem on an early install. That's the download zip file, right? The early Stuffit Expander would produce the lame library file, but it was damaged and Audacity wouldn't open it.

If you click on the download file and select Open With, what are the options? Are there more than one?

Hi Koz...
Before i could read your reply, i threw all my lame folder in the bin and downloaded it from another source. This time, i was a asked to do a "proper install", which ended in "lame encoder was succesfully installed on your computer". But, after that, just impossible to find it! I jus don't know where ts been saved!!! Anyway, i then tried to export my audacity project as a mp3. Like before, it asked me to try to locate the lamelibmp3.dylib file and like before did not find it. I then activated "find all mac dylib files" and a few numbered ones stopped been greyed out. I chose the 1st one called lamelibmp3.0.0.0.dylib. Audacity replied it was not the expected one and asked me if I wanted to carry on, to which I sais YES keeping my fingers crossed.... and the encoding started.... and it worked! I checked sound and all, and it looks like it can be read by Itunes. It also weighs as little as a mp3 track, unlike the wave encoding..
I'll let you know if this lasts or not.... But now, where do I find the lame file, just in case I have to get rid of it in the future? Neither spotlight nor other search tool seem to be able to locate it!!!! the path was supposed to be hd/usr/local/lib.... but can't find those folders anywhere....
Hope this was helpful to you..
Have fun and... take care! We all need you!

Having problems exporting files as mp3:
I'm running Tiger on Macbookpro. I've downloaded Audacity 1.2.5. How do I extract the LAME file from libmp3lame-osx-universal-3.97? When I click on the install icon, I get Lame Library v3.97 Installer-pmproj, and no obvious way to extract the elusive LAME icon.

I tried downloading an iTunes LAME lib, but it is also faded out and Audacity doesn't recognize it.
