Solved: No stereo on Vista

Post by Rollin' Rog » Mon Aug 20, 2007 8:35 pm

I'm having this problem on Windows Vista:

I appear to be having the Vista "stereo" issue described here:
Windows Vista

There are quite frequent reports on Vista of USB turntables only
recording in mono even when Audacity is set to record in stereo:
only one channel of the LP is transferred and if Audacity is set
to record in stereo, this single channel is then duplicated in
both channels of the Audacity waveform.

The USB Audio codec for "record" is selected both in Audacity
and in the Control Panel, and Stereo is selected. It does not
matter whether this or Microsoft Sound Mapper is selected.

>> now I know this was posted awhile back, that's how I got to the Wiki article -- just wondering if anyone has any further on it.

My Realtek drivers appear to be the latest, atleast as far as what is available on the Acer site.

>> I connected and installed on XP -- and the Stereo is as it should be.

>> I can't tell as yet whether it is just recording in one channel and duplicating that, or recording both channels and mixing them.

edit I'd definitely be interested in hearing from any other Vista users who have this problem and whether it applies to other Sound Device Vendors besides "Realtek"

I tried upgrading to the Beta version of Audacity, but that made no difference except to give me a bad audio device error when selecting the USB codec for recording. Microsoft Sound Mapper had no problem.

Update on this.

Problem resolved.

I received some feedback from "Chris" at Numark.com (the turntable vendor).

He sent a pdf configuration doc for Vista.

There was ONE thing and one thing only significantly different from the XP setup.

In your Sounds > Recording > USB Codec > Advanced properties there is a configuration for "Exclusive" mode with two boxes in it.

Both of these are checked by default and must be UNchecked for stereo to be received.

As a side benefit, the USB Mic codec now works in Audacity 1.3 beta; previously it erred and MS Sound Mapper had to be used.

I just got an ion USB Turntable, and I had recorded one record album so far. Then I got to reading about the turntable online, and came across this thread. I'm on Vista, btw, and I am so grateful, as it might have been a long time before I realized I was actually recording in mono. I really didn't notice that both wave forms were exactly the same until I read about it here.

I just wanted to point out that even if you uncheck those boxes, you still won't get stereo unless it also says "2 Channel, 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)" like it does in your screen shot illustration, because that won't be selected by default in that dropdown, you have to select it. Mine still had the default 1 Channel, 16 bit... etc

I really appreciate finding out about this, before I recorded who knows how many albums in MONO!. Thanks again.

I have been searching for an answer to this problem since March '07, and I finally came across this thread! Thank you guys!

I've been using Audacity for a couple of years, but when I got my Vista machine in March of last year I had to stop because I was unable to record stereo. Now I'm hard at work on my vinyl collection from the '60's and '70's.

Thanks again. You guys are my heroes!

Dave

This was the nearest problem I could find to mine, so I'm bumping it,
I have just managed to get audacity to recognise the right part of stereo, so I thought it was just playing in mono. But on closer inspection it's playing stereo however the left part is just playing at a really low volume, my computer is running Vista and these problems are getting really annoying.
If anyone can shed any light onto this I'd be really grateful.
