Windows 7, cant get devices right

Post by drumon » Fri Feb 19, 2010 5:50 pm

I'm trying to record LPs from my hifi.

I am using a headphone out into my laptop line-in socket.

I have different options for sound devices, eg. interface host is "MME host" or "Windows Directsound host"

Then "Microsoft Soundmapper" input or output vs. "Speakers/Headphone IDT" or "Microphone/line-in IDT"

What do I choose to make it work...?

When I press record a message pops up saying the input couldnt be used because the settings are wrong????

Not sure what to do next.

I have everything set at 44100Hz and 16bit recording quality.
What does happen if it does work, is the recording plays back through the speakers and sometimes I cant seem to UNselect the built in laptop mic either which is a nuisance.

Set the "Line In" as the default recording input in the Windows Control Panel http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel

I have tried everything in the above link to try and select the correct input.

Now, I get this message when trying to record :

"ERROR WHILE OPENING SOUND DEVICE, PLEASE CHECK THE INPUT DEVICE SETTINGS AND THE PROJECT SAMPLE RATE"

I have checked all sample rate settings in windows and audacity, they match, 44100Hz 16Bit.

In the Audacity screen, there are pull down menus to choose input and output.

I have choices between the following,

MME Sound Mapper input
MME Mic/Line in
Windows Direct Sound mic/line in

What one should I be choosing? I am recording on a dell laptop, with no external soundcard.

What else am I doing wrong?
