Imported songs a burst of noise!

Post by Belle854 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 6:38 am

I have Windows XP, and have recently downloaded Audacity 1.2.6

Whenever I try to import a music file (I've tried .wav, .mp3, etc.) it turns up on the screen as a five-second high-pitched burst of noise. I've tried resetting my preferences and it didn't work. Please help me!!!

Try importing these files:
piano.wav
(1.06 MiB) Downloaded 40 times
piano.mp3
(100.19 KiB) Downloaded 95 times
piano.ogg
(142.31 KiB) Downloaded 36 times
Note that just because a file says that it a WAV file (has a ".WAV" extension) does not mean that it IS a WAV file. (You could take ANY file and name it as a WAV file).

You're looking at my entire musical career there. Enjoy it. I can't wait for the rest of my 14:54 of fame.

Windows is really bad about file identities. First they hide the file extensions from you based on "Don't worry your pretty little head about it." Then they assume anything they don't understand is a Windows Media file.

Since they only hide the first extension, you can have music.wav which will turn out to really be music.wav.mp3. Windows is hiding the ".mp3" part from you and it really is an MP3 file.

You can tell Windows in preferences to stop hiding file extensions and that goes a long way to clearing up confusion about file types. Nobody who's serious about Windows lets it hide anything.
