Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

What You Hear

Post by mjwman » Sun Feb 07, 2010 5:47 pm

"What you hear"

Hi, this is my first post.
Help! I have a new PC running Windows7 .
I have downloaded Audacity but this version does not have a box with various sources in it.
One that I desperately want is What You Hear which allows me to record anything I can hear on the computer.
Is this fuction still available?

Thanks

That depends on your sound card drivers. "Stereo Mix"/"What U Hear" is disabled by the sound card drivers for some sound cards on Windows 7 (sometime on Vista as well).
See here for how to select it if it is available, and possible workarounds if it is not available:

and

You should be using the latest version of 1.3.x on Windows 7 (currently 1.3.11)

:D
Thanks so much for those links. I am now up and running!

Like many I guess, I read all that stuff quickly and do not take it in.
I assumed my soundcard (after updating the drivers on this brand new PC) did not support that function.
I then went and orded some patch leads as suggested (not arrived yet).
I read further and downloaded the Freecorder soundbar but every time I went to set it up, all I got was the dowwnload page again!

THEN.. I read about disabled devices.
Went into the Realtek card clicked and enabled what I was after. Just like that!

A quick Lame download later and I am recording OK.

A big thanks.

That's pretty interesting. I have that same problem too. Say for example, if I'm playing Windows Media player I can't record it on Audacity at the same time like I used to. Unlike with the pre Windows 7 64-bit versions, I can only record through the jack now.

Try what I said. Go to the card in control panel. Right click to enable the function.
