No sound....ever

Now that I am on the right section of the forum...I think.
I recently bought a Starlogic USb turntable. I plugged it into my computer (computer was on, but didn't ask for a driver) and loaded the Audacity software from the website as recommended by kw. There is still no sound when I play a record. Shouldn't I be able to hear the record without recording it first? If so, can anyone educate me on how to make this happen?
