Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

split and insert?

Post by audioNewbie » Tue Jan 08, 2008 1:46 am

I am two quick questions on the use of Audacity:

1. I have a large wav file (2 gb), can audacity split it into several small wave files ?

2. I have a audio file (WMA format) that I want to insert some translation. What I need to do is (1) play the audio file, (2) pause at a certain point, then I would need to record my translation. I expect the audio editing software insert my voice translation right after the pause point.

Could I do these in Audacity?

If not, could you refer me some audio software that allow me to do this?

I am really an audio newbie. Thanks for the help.

If the file will open in Audacity, then you can use Audacity to split it up. This can actually be semi-automated:

Audacity will not open a Windows Media file. You need to convert it to MP3 or WAV first. I think there's a couple of other formats you can use.

Thank you very much, Koz, for showing me how to split tracks.

I figured out a way to save WMA to WAV. Could you give me a quick link on how to insert live voice recording to an existing track (in wav or mp3)?

Thanks again.

Careful, AudioNewbie. I know this is nit-picking, but you won't be adding your voice to an existing track. You'll be recording a second track and then mixing them together into a new track when you export. Vocabulary is one of the biggest barriers we have to jump over when answering questions here.

That said, here's a wiki page detailing how to make a simple voice and music podcast that should tell you what you need to know:
