I have successfully used Audacity before on my Mac.
I had successfully recorded a track but didn't like it. I then clicked and dragged over the track and deleted it. But there was a thin sliver of recording time left so I went back and deleted that last bit of sound on the wave display.
When I want to open a new file in Audacity or just open the whole application the window does open normally. But when I hit record that thin sliver of recored time still shows but this time it's showing in red. After a couple of seconds the whole program quits (the message appears :"The program Audacity has unexpectedly quit")
I tried restart and I even tried trashing Audacity and re-downloading it but the same thing happens, you hit record and then it shuts down.
***I still have this problem and if not that, after hitting record I also get the message sometimes:
"error while opening sound device. please checl the input device settings and the project sample rate."
Please Help with some simple steps. I might not understand advanced lingo. Thanks

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

No a Behringer USA202 audio interface. I had successfully recorded with it using Audacity before.
The problem is with this red line showing at the beginning of the wave time chart. It's indicating something is wrong but the program just quits a couple of seconds after this. It seems like the program didn't like me click and dragging to delete that small sliver of time before and now it keeps remembering that even though I downloaded Audacity all over again.

problem solved. I had to re-downlaod Audacity but this time I first trashed all the files in my finder.
By MP3 documents in Audacity were not affected

You don't need the Slash and Burn technique. You can make Audacity start over at First Birthday by trashing its preference file.
Users > koz > Library > Preferences > audacity Preferences
Drag that file to the trash and restart the Mac.
That will not clear any damaged sound files or exports, so if you have those, no amount of re-installing or trashing of preferences is going to help. Very few people manage to dig themselves out of USB Hell, so you are one in a row. For a while...
