Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Audacity/Audio MIDI problem

Post by adegg » Wed Jan 02, 2008 9:01 pm

I am trying to set-up my ion USB turntable and have run into an Audacity/Audio MIDI problem. I have an iMac Intel and followed the instructions that came with my turntable concerning Intel-based Macs, i.e. I downloaded a version of Audacity from the website. The version I downloaded was 1.2.5 as this was marked for Intel. Having downloaded it, I followed the instructions in the software installation booklet. In 'Properties For' in the Audio MIDI setup, I changed the setting to USB Audio CODEC. However, in Audio Input it told me that 'Input is not supported', so I couldn't set the sample rate or format. I managed to get Audio Input to appear by changing to 'Built-in Line Input' in the 'Properties For' setting but now all options for 'USB Audio CODEC' in the pull-down windows - in 'Properties For' and the 'Default/System Output' windows - have disappeared. I have Restarted my Mac and started over from scratch, including unplugging/replugging the USB cable, but to no avail. 'USB Audio CODEC' has simply vanished. I will greatly appreciate any suggestions, as I have a very long queue of vinyl memories waiting to enter the 21st century.

You may need to stay in the 20th century to get this to work. Does your turntable have the two analog RCA cables as well as the USB? If so, I would recommend transferring all the work analog. Once you have troubles with USB software, you could be there a very long time struggling--and even if you succeed, not all the records will transfer.

I wrote a How-To:

If your turntable has no Line/Phono switch, then it's a little more complicated. If it has no RCA cables, then this could be rough.

well, i don't know whether to laugh or cry. I knew I should've stayed in the 20th century. There are indeed two analog RCA cables sticking out the back of my deck. I shall study your analogue copying method from your other post and attempt to emulate. No Radio Shack at hand over here in London (I don't think), but as long as those cables are standard kit, I should be able to find some. Ta

Ideally, you'd turn up a stereo audio cable, female RCA to male 3.5mm. That will connect without the coupler/barrels. The cable with the male RCAs is more common.

Thee's lucky lad - a quick trip up t'Tottenham Court Road should easily enable you to source the required component (harder to do in Manchester ....)
