Re: Recording what's going through sound card
Let me echo Koz: Wiretap Studio is an excellent piece of software that will allow you to record anything you want on your Mac. I own it and use it as my primary means of recording on the Mac. However, I like Audacity for editing features it offers that Wiretap Studio does not, (e.g., "cut," "copy," "paste," "reverse," etc.), and I discovered through some reading on the web that Soundflower would allow one to record streaming audio on the Mac with Audacity, a feature it innately lacks. Hopefully, you can get Audacity and Soundflower to work work for you to record audio on your Mac--it does work for me--but if you can't, I recomment Wiretap Studio wholeheartedly. However, as Koz points out, you'll have to pay for it, but I think it's well worth it.
Good luck.
Good luck.

And while you're here, have you ever used WireTap to record either or both sides of a VIOP conversation? All those people having trouble capturing the far end just need to pop for a license? Because right now, as far as I can tell, you can't do that with anything short of two computers.

Koz, no I haven't tried that. At present, my only recording activities involve digitizing music from analog sources and capturing streaming audio such as internet radio, etc.

Shucks. We'll keep looking.
VOIP is an interesting case. As I've written earlier, Internet telephone calls are required to run the record and playback sides of the audio service at the same time--with no dangerous interaction. I know from videoconferencing that delays play a pretty big part of that, but what do you do if you have two different programs struggling to manage the audio?
Still the all-time champ at recording this is to put a microphone on the table between the computer speaker and the human speaker. And plug it into a separate computer.

Re: Recording what's going through sound card
Just out of curiosity, when did this become true? I have Audacity 1.2.6 on a PowerBook G4 running 10.3.9 (Panther), and it "works" fine when I try to record stuff coming through my sound card (just like WinXP). However, I'm having the same "problem" as everyone else on my MacBook Pro running Leopard, i.e., can't record streaming audio. Is it the new hardware or the new OS? Not complaining--plenty of ways to work around--just curious.

Didn't think I needed to repeat what I've read in other posts on this forum. Delete my post if you think it's inappropriate.

Don't worry about it, Koz is just being curmudgeonly.
It's what he lists as his "occupation" in his Audacity profile .....

I"ve never been able to do that with my PowerBook or the iBook before that and I can't seem to find what you're referring to. Can you post a direction, quote, or URL?
