Background Noise when recording from USB Turntable (Pro-Ject

Post by matparks » Sun Jan 17, 2010 7:58 pm

Have recently purchased a Pro-Ject Debut III USB Turntable.

Have made my first recording of vinyl but and all was very easy!

Only issue is that I'm getting a weird background noise to the recording. It's pretty constant but mainly noticeable at lower volumes.

Have looked around various forum posts but can't find anything like this. Any ideas as to how to remove or filter the noise would be greatly appreciated as am about to embark on a mass vinyl import! Any other tips/ secrets for improved recordings would be appreciated too!

Total newbie where this is concerned so please be gentle!

Can you post a short sample so that we know what you're talking about?

I presume that this is the noise you mean? (amplified)

Perhaps someone would like to offer a second opinion, but I think that it's possibly power-supply noise.
Are you recording on a laptop? If so, try running from batteries with the mains adaptor disconnected.
Are there any USB hubs involved?
Do you live next door to a power-station?

Hi There,

Yep, that's the noise!

Am indeed working from a LapTop so will try running without mains connection.
No USB hub, it's running on straight connection between laptop and turntable. Once connected though there is a hum, which I'd noted on a previous post is quite normal. Is this not the case?

Am only 5 miles down the road from a massive Power Station, am guessing that this is a safe enough exclusion zone!
Thanks for hep so far!

Hi There,

Eventually managed to try recording without mains connection, but the noise still exists on recordings.

One thing occurred to me, I'm using different connection leads than those supplied with the turntable. These leads are without an 'earth' connection, so the turntable is unearthed. Do you think this could be the problem, the noise is a static interference?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Could you select about 1 second of this noise and use "Export Selection as WAV", then upload the exported file as an attachment to your post.

Hi Steve,

It's exactly the same noise as you extracted previously.
Will however do so if it will hep you further.

Oh it's YOU again ! :D

In that case, no need for a new audio sample.

Why?

:? Exactly what sort of leads are you using?

The amplifier is out of reach with the standard cables supplied. So had to purchase longer leads:
See http://www.audioaffair.co.uk/index.php? ... ductId=801

Standard RCA > RCA, but without the earth option given by the cables supplied.

Reason why I think it's this is that when I lift the record from the turntable, the slip-mat sometimes lifts with it. Suggesting static.
I also sometimes get a small static shock from the turntable if I hit the casing first. Guessing this must have some effect on the recording?
