dj-set recording problem

Post by steve_9961 » Sat Jan 16, 2010 9:19 pm

Hi, first of all, i'm from belgium so i'm sorry in advance if my english isn't so good

I downloaded audacity 1.2.6. to record my "home-made DJ-sets". I plugged my mixer with a rca to 3.5jack into the microphone plug of my laptop (windows vista) and started recording. The weird thing now is, is that when i listen to what i've recorded has a strange "distortion". Sometimes the sound is very good but most of all the sound isn't so good. it fades, voices aren't clear, the sound heckles/stutters (not sure if this is the right word). I've searched a lot of wiki's about audacity but haven't found the right answer yet. I hope someone can help me with this issue.

I know, the microphone plug is maybe not the best way but i don't have a line-in on my laptop...

I hope that you can understand what i mean, if not, please ask and i'll try to explain as good as possible.

Steve

edit: here you can download a sample to hear the sound that i mean: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HFCMW1SX

We know what the problem is. the computer is expecting a tiny, wispy, delicate mono microphone signal and you're delivering a massive, powerful, Line-Level Stereo signal. The distortion is the computer crying for help.

Most Windows PC laptops don't lend themselves to doing what you want. You can do this by adding one of the USB sound cards we reviewed.

Any Mac will do this. They don't have microphone inputs, but they do have high-level Stereo Line-In.

Most PC Deskside computers have Stereo Line-In as well.
