Playback hesitates after I hit "play"

I'm running 1.2.6 on Windows 7. I've been using the software to do some fairly straightforward editing (ie, removing "um"s and "ah"s from a webinar...). I got to the 4th file (each file is about 20 mins. long), and the software developed the following problem: When I hit "play", there is a severe lag between me pressing the spacebar (or clicking "play") and playback actually happening. Sometimes as much as 10 seconds. Eventually though, it does play. I've closed and reopened the software multiple times, I've tried bumping Audacity's priority up in the task manager, I've closed processes... Rebooting the computer fixes the problem, but only for a few minutes. Has anyone else encountered this, and is there a fix? I'm up against deadline here, and I really need the software to perform. Please help!

Version 1.2 doesn't play very well with Windows 7.

Try downloading version 1.3.11 from here:
