Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Edit the audio in a WMV or FLV video clip?

Post by ed_imms » Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:06 pm

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but a search yielded no direct answer:

With Audacity 1.2.6, can I edit the audio of a WMV and/or FLV video recording? Problem I am having is that the original audio source is a telephone conversation. Mainly, the audio level is way too low.

Essentially, I'd like to be able to increase the level, and hopefully kill some of the static/noise.

Possible?

I'd appreciate any information.

No, but you can with version 1.3.

Download the latest 1.3.11 from here:
http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacity- ... -alpha.zip
Extract the zip file to a new folder and double-click Audacity.exe in that folder to launch it.

You can have version 1.2 and 1.3 on the same computer as long as you have only one of them open at a time.
1.2 projects can be opened in 1.3 but 1.3 projects can't be opened in 1.2.

In order to import a WMV or flv file, you will also need the ffmpeg library, which you can get from the link on this page:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tallffmpeg

Follow the instructions on the page for both download and installation.

I appreciate the info, thanks. Downloaded 1.3 and ffmpeg library, and I can now import. Was able open a WMV and increase gain enough. All is well.

However, I can't seem to figure out how to save my now edited file in the original WMV format. Is that possible? In other words, I don't want a seperate audio-only file as the product of this excersize. Rather, I want to edit the audio portion of my WMV (or FLV) and then save the edited file in the original format, preserving both audio and video.

Is that possile?

Again, thanks, and I do appreciate any help.

The way that you would normally do it is to edit the audio in an audio editor (such as Audacity) and Export for Audacity as a WAV file. You would then open the video in a video editor and import the edited audio file.

If the only editing of the audio that you want to do is to adjust the volume, most video editors can do that so there would be no need to use Audacity at all. Audacity is an audio editor - it does not support video, so you need a video editor program.
