Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Can't save files

Post by BobbKatt » Sat Dec 22, 2007 1:12 pm

My first post didn't seem to appear. I've love Audacity and have been using 1.2.4 on my W2K Pro PC without problem. But, I just downloaded/installed 1.2.6, and all of the "save" and "export" choices are greyed out in the pull-down menu so I can't save anything I record. What do I do, pls?

Your previous post is on the wrong board, but don't worry, I'm sure that someone will delete it eventually.

Regarding the problem - I've not come across this before (not that many Win 2k users here)

Audacity 1.2.x stores its settings in the registry, so there could be some incompatibility problem if you still have 1.24 settings with v 1.2.6. If you are experienced in using regedit, you could try uninstalling and manually removing the Audacity references in the registry (don't try this if you don't know what you are doing as you could stop Windows from working).

Your other option is to have a go with Audacity 1.3.4 beta and see if that is any better. (I know that they warn you on the web site that it is an unstable beta version, but many users including myself use it without any problems).

Just a thought, You DO have one or more audio tracks present don't you (You can't save an empty project)

Steve...thank you! You gave me the clue to fix my problem. I'm not really technically savvy, and I wouldn't muck around in my registry other than following someone's step-by-step instructions. But, learning that my problem was likely registry-related, I uninstalled 1.2.6 and reinstalled 1.2.4, which worked perfectly before. Got the same result: the file drop-down menu was greyed out. So, I completely uninstalled Audacity, ran Norton Windows Doctor, let it fix everything it found wrong, rebooted, and reinstalled 1.2.4...and it works perfectly. Actually, you solved my problem twice. I had planned to use both of my PCs yesterday to record Christmas music from audio streams. I checked for updates to Audacity, downloaded and installed the newer version on both PCs...with the same consequence. Fortunately, the same fix worked on both, so I've got 1.2.4 working again. Thanks again for your help. BK
