Audacity crashes when I use noise removal.

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I checked my prefrences, and I unchecked "Display VST effects in GUI mode" which is what I think you meant (Is it? What is "GUI"?).
I tried to do a noise removal, and to my surprise it let me take the noise profile (this is where crashing would occur). Unfortunately, when I opened noise removal again, and tried to hear a preview, Audacity crashed again.

So I got farther than I had previously been able to, but no cigar.

[Edit- I tried again and now I can't even get a noise profile now.]

Any other ideas? Sorry for being such a pain!

GUI = Graphical User Interface.

No, I meant try removing the tick from "Enable Effects > VST"
This will completely disable VST support (you can switch it back on later - this is just a test).

Are you sure that you are using Audacity 1.3.8? This was a known problem in 1.3.5 but was fixed in 1.3.6 and (3 million downloads later) this is the first time I've come across the problem since then.

Yep, sure I've got 1.3.8.

I checked my preferences again, and I don't seem to actually have the option you're talking about.

Oh :?

Newsflash: Audacity 1.3.11 was released today. I'm not aware of anything that specifically relates to the problem that you are having, but it does include several important bug fixes (and it should also have the option that you appear to be missing). http://audacityteam.org/download/

I've downloaded 1.3.11 and, astoundingly, I'm still crashing when I try to use the noise removal.
Any other ideas?

>>Update: Oh boy. So I've found that it only crashes when I'm working on certain projects. It seems to be a little arbitrary. I haven't done thorough testing on which it works on, but it seems to crash on my past 4 or 5 projects, but not earlier ones.
Perhaps the most dumbfounding discovery I made is that I am able to copy tracks from one of the aforementioned projects, paste it into a new project and apply a noise removal successfully.

This is so baffling.

Anybody have any ideas on this?
I'm still not getting any noise removal.

On the projects that have the problem, try opening them in the new version of Audacity and save them with a different name. Watch out for any error messages. Open the new (copy) project and try the noise reduction. Does it still crash?

I am having similar problems (not the crashing, but won't take a sample). Window 7 64bit 1.3.11

Actually I have been having major problem with audacity recognizing anything I select with the mouse. I am converting LPs. My converter turntable saves straight to MP3. Last month I had no problem with the noise removal. But when I select a section to play / export, it would not set the selection start and end properly and I had to do it by hand (with edits at the bottom of the screen).

Now after a month of Windows updates, selection works fine for playing (and I am assuming exporting). Not so much for sampling.

And by the way (both last month and now) if I do a select all, everything works fine!!!!!

There is definitely a bug with the system recognizing the sub-selected areas.

Thanks if you can help, plus more then happy to run an alpha if you give me somewhere to download it from :D

Perhaps you need to uncheck the "Snap To" box to the left of the selection bar at the bottom of the screen. If that is checked, the cursor will always jump to the nearest division of whatever time units you have selected with the drop-down box at the right end of each of the selection boxes. If that is seconds, the cursor will always jump to the nearest full second when "Snap To" is checked.

<<<I'm working on certain projects.>>>

Which are? We tend to go with what you tell us whether it's enough or not. This time it may not be enough. What is the project? What kind of sound is it and where did you get it from? Details, details.

We got led down the garden path once when a poster was trying to edit a 9-hour project -- and not telling us. It wasn't that he was hostile. It just never came up and that kind of editing is brittle and extraordinarily difficult to do.
