My question is, can I use Audacity to modify a piece of music, so that the result will be a little short than original one, say play back 3 minutes instead of the original 3'20"?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Shorten the whole piece of music
Sure you can - you could lop 20 seconds off the end, or the beginning - or even a chunk out of the middle. Just select the section you want to delete by clicking and dragging with your cursor and hit the delete key. You can tidy up with the fade-in/fade-out effects.
Or you can squeeze the 3''20" down to 3'00" by slecting the whole project, use the Ctrl-A shortcut, then use the change speed effect.
