Can't Export Multiple Files On 11th Attempt

Post by file_13 » Fri Jan 01, 2010 4:25 am

After somewhat successfully recording 10 LP albums, & exporting songs as multiple files or separate tracks, on the 11th LP album attempt, after recording & attempting to export as multiple files, I get the following error message: Unable to open target file for writing.

You can get that error if you use punctuation marks in your filename. Like to use dates in your filename? Write them like this: 20100101.

Upper and lower case letters, numbers, underscore and dash. Tha's the whole list of safe characters in a filename.

You can also get that error if your really did run out of space on your hard drive. Did you?

Hi Koz! Thanks for your reply. What I'm doing is recording LP albums to my computer, via an ION USB Profile Pro turntable. I tried using the so-called "EZ" vinyl converter, which wasn't so easy, & gave me multiple song copies, as well as having to download & install I-Tunes, that I really didn't want to have to do, but I'm new at this, so I started with that. I dumped those & installed Audacity, which with a slight learning curve, seemed to work better for me. It doesn't split tracks, though, so after recording the entire album, as 1 long file, I have to then listen again, & split the tracks, after removing as much noise as I can without distorting the music too much. Upon researching how, I use the file menu, & export multiple feature to export as MP3s, with use of the Lame encoder, which I also had to download & install. I'm currently storing all the albums, with their songs on the computer, until I can burn them to CD.
I'm using a 2nd hard drive, which shows 309 GB free out of 335, which answers your 1st question. I'm using file names such as, & these are the actual 2 that exported from 8 songs:
1. More Than A Feeling 2. Peace Of Mind These are the files that didn't export:
3. Foreplay/Long Time 4. Rock & Roll Band 5. Smokin' 6. Hitch A Ride
7. Something About You 8. Let Me Take You Home Tonight
As I'm replying to you, & re-reading your replies to me, I think I'm seeing the problem(s), & there appear to be 3 of them, but I'll await yor confirmation, & suggestions as to how to resolve the issues. I've temporarily saved the file as Boston.aup, I guess it is, as the .aup was automatic, through the program. How do I go back in & fix those file names, if that's what I have to do, & will I still be able to export as muliple tracks, songs/files, even though I already saved the album as 1 long file, but with the tracks marked for splitting into songs?
I suppose I can just rename them again for what they're supposed to be, once I export them.

Koz & Wax: Thanks for your replies to my post! You steered me in the right direction, & got me where I needed to be. The only file name that the export function of the program didn't like was the song with the / in it's title. I figured out how to go back in, & edit the label, so it's without the / in it, & then that song exported with no problems or errors. The rest were OK, & exported just fine as well.
Thanks for your participation! I appreciate your involvement, help, & support.
All is now, once again all well with the world!

Thanks for this forum! Using XP. I also received this error message and could find no reason. Created new target files in different locations, even did a defrag. Was about to use old DOS ZTree to see if the files were being hidden or locked, but first went to see if there was a newer stable version, and ended up here.

The rest of the file of 18 songs exported successfully but had suddenly stopped, leaving 3 songs to go. Problem was, the song title in the lable had a comma and question mark in it. Removed the question mark and export to mp3 succeeded. Hopefully they've removed this glitch. It's something you'd never think of as being "wrong".

At least I got a good defrag and a lesson for the future! Thanks again.
