Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

No Sound or Record after loading Audacity 1.2.6.

Post by Frankl » Wed Dec 30, 2009 1:56 am

I purchase a USB Gemini Vinyl 2MP3 turntable. It has with it Gemini Audacity software to install on my XP Windows PC. I followed the operations manual to the letter on Computer Setup Page 6. Per the instructions
Recording: To monitor the audio signal that you are sending from the VINYL 2MP3 you must set the pull-down menu that is located next to the right of the MICROPHONE icon on the main screen. You should be able to hear the signal coming from your VINL2MP3. Now you can begin recording. The pull down menu was grayed out. I can not hear or record.

I have a DELL Inspiron 530 running Windows XP Professional version 2002, Service Pack 3

Device Manager has the following listings:
ATI Functions Driver for High Definition Audio-ATI AA01
Realtek High Definition Audio
Audio Codes
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codes
Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller
Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device
Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer
Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
USB Audio Device

The CD Gemini Audacity that came with the turntable has file “audacity-win-1.2.6” to install.

Please advise.

Bill, tried all steps as you have provided with the link. I downloaded the 1.2.6. version again from web site and the beta version. I almost have sound but not as though I have a cd playing. It comes through very very low. I tried recording same results.

USB devices have a habit of hijacking the entire sound – output as well as input – and they don’t tend to have loudspeakers (hence “no sound”).

What you need to do is to direct the Windows sound output to your PC's soundcard Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Audio>Sound Playback - and make this setting to the PC soundcard.

You may also need to ensure that Audacity sends it output to the PC soundcard Edit>Preferences>Audio>Playback - and set this also to your PC soundcard. You may need to stop and restart Audacity for this setting to take effect.

WC Thank you for your reply....I feel I am very close to getting this turntable to work with my computer but just missing something from a recipe.
I followed your last instructions. I get sound but it is not audioable. I can see the sound on the top of the main screen with the green and red lines playing but no sound it is distorted. I can click on the start the monitoring but it just noise. I can hear the music on the turnable but the turntable has no speakers on it.

thanks for having patience with these issues.

Ok - is there a gain control (volume control) on your turntable (some have them some don't) - if so try turning this down.

WC there is no gain control (volume control) on this turnable. I read the functions again in the manual. I have looked at the turnable, upside down, inside out and there is no volume control. There is a pitch slide control which set on the center for the speed control, anti-skate adjustment, etc. but no volume control.

advise.

So you can see the input (red) and output (green) meters bouncing when you monitor/record - yes? If so then how far up the scale are they going? You should also see a thin blue line in the metering - this indicates the highest level reached - where is that? If you go into clipping (signal overload - you don't want this) you will also see a thin red line at the end of the metering bars - do you get that?

If you press the Record button do you get the blue waveforms advancing avross the track window? If so how far up the scale do they go? Note that you can enlarge the view by clicking and dragging on the bottom edge of the track window.

Can you post a screenshot of the meters and the blue WAVs?

Did you read the link that Bill provided above to the Wiki article about using USB TTs with Audacity - and follow the instructions therein?

What really puzzles me is that I did a quick Search of the forum and the only orther posting I could see about a user with a Gemini TT was fairly recently back in November from user Wolfe - and they reported success witha Gemini TT - see: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... ini#p56177

Frank,

that could be a potential problem as it removes your control over the signal level - however Wolfe's post (see link above) does offer some hope that all will be ok.

But I do hope that you kept the receipt - and the store you bought from has a good returns policy - just in case ...

WC, yes to your questions about seeing the input (red) and output (green) meters bouncing when you monitor/record. They go to the max on the meters to the right. Also yes to the thin blue line in the metering it is located on the far right side of the meter. This goes for monitoring and record. The only difference on the record is I can only see the output (green) metering all to the right side. The input (red) stays green on the left side. I do not see a change to the screen when I click to view clipping (on or off)?

I copy and paste what the screen is showing but it will not allow me to attached file doc documents to you.

I hope you can see the attached screen shoots of I just stated above.

Again, thank you for your advice.
