I am very new to this, so please bear with me. I have Audacity 1.2.6 (Mac OS 10) and have successfully recorded from vinyl and done the basic audio clean-up on the file.
Now I want to "Export as MP3". I have followed the instructions for downloading the zip file, have created a folder (Lame MP3 Plugin Folder) in my MAC "Home" directory and moved what I unzipped into that folder .
The problem is, when I then go through the "Export" process, the option for clicking on the plugin (or anything else in that new folder!) is greyed out. So first, what exactly is the plugin file I should be targeting? What I see at the end of my journey is "libmp3lame.dylib". Is that it?
Please help if you can with some step-by-step instructions for this novice.
My Lame MP3 ("export to") is greyed out on set-up

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Intel Macs running Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6 do not support Audacity 1.2.
I use Audacity 1.3.7 from here...
Audacity 1.3.7 -- Mac
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... -1.3.7.zip
...on both Intel Macs. You can go with 1.3.10 which is the latest public release from here...
Audacity Current Release -- Mac
http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac
...but that one has a problem or two. You can also try the "Nightly Build" (1.3.11) from here...
Audacity 1.3 Nightly Build -- Mac
http://www.audacity.homerow.net/index.php?dir=mac%2F
Then you can get set up for music production. All your Audacity 1.2 Projects should open up in later Audacities.

Re: My Lame MP3 ("export to") is greyed out on set-up
Koz's advice is good - use Audacity 1.3.11. It is a universal binary and will run just fine on PPC and Intel machines with OS X 10.4 and higher.
If you insist on sticking with 1.2.6 (which is meant for PPC machines only) then you need "LameLib-Carbon.sit" from this page: http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/
This will unstuff to a shared library named "LameLib". You can put it anywhere on your system, but inside the folder where you have Audacity 1.2.6 is a good place.
If you upgrade to 1.3.11, then you have the correct version of Lame - "libmp3lame.dylib". The installer should have put it in /usr/local/lib/audacity/ . Audacity 1.3.11 will automatically look in that location for the library.
You can have 1.2.6 and 1.3.11 installed at the same time, but you can only run one at a time. As Koz points out, you can open 1.2.6 projects with 1.3.11, but be aware that once you save them in 1.3.11 then 1.2.6 will no longer be able to open them.

Re: My Lame MP3 ("export to") is greyed out on set-up
Thank you so much. I downloaded the new updated Beta version of Audacity and the path to exporting to MP3 is so much smoother. Again, many thanks for your help. I'm off and running!
