Sound Delay Issue

This is great software. I looked at some of the other posts and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. What I have going on is a delayed sound output. For example, I'm playing a record through my mixer which is lined through the computer input, and the recording catches the sound perfectly. But what is playing has a delayed sound through my output amplifier. So what I'm playing on my record is at regular speed and what's coming out of my speaker is a second behind it.

I do have the "Software Play through" selection on so that I can hear what is coming out of my input. What I want to do is simple, old fashioned dj mixing where I can record one track and record another on top and be able to hear the first track. I figured out how to record and such, but the delayed sound is the killer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Turn off "Software Playthrough" as by definition that has delay as the sound is processed through the computer. Turn on "play other tracks while recording new one" right by it, then unmute the line-in as a playback device in the Windows control panel. If it works, that should have less delay.

Thank you for the response. I'm new to the digital world. I did as you said. By unclicking the "Software Playthrough", I don't get any sound going out of the output while I'm recording. It will play fine after recording. But I'd like to play the track and record at the same time at the same speed. I guess the computer will have to "process" the input, thus inevitably creating a delay on the output, however short. I checked my windows control panel and I don't have anything on mute. Is there something else I can try?

Jaime,

Your sound card driver software should give you the option of listening to the input directly without a substantial delay (before it gets to Audacity). How exactly to do that depends on the sound card drivers.

This wiki page details some of the instructions for generic drivers, but you'll need to do something slightly different:

You haven't said which operating system you're using, but generally you want the Playback volume turned up (and unmuted) for the input you have your Turntable plugged into. Those instructions are talking about recording volume, but you want playback instead. I don't think I can get any more detailed than that.

If all else fails, talk to the computer manufacturer.
