Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

You should probably hang onto it as a cultural artifact of a program that will soon be obsolete. 1.4.x is waiting in the wings for the instructions and support to be finished.
Six things can kill Audacity on a Mac:
Hard drives filling up.
Multiple programs trying to access QuickTime Services or the Sound Manager.
Ratty USB connections.
Old or unsupported drivers for your external sound device.
Multiple external devices.
Slow/old machine.
I recorded all the sound tracks for a theatrical short with a PowerBook recording the Line-In and Audacity. Worked fine. However I can put Audacity right in the toilet if I have EyeTV, QuickTime, and iTunes all running at the same time. Or Safari and FireFox. Anything like that.
Live capture or playback of picture or sound isn't like copying files. It doesn't stop and wait for the system to catch up. You get holes, stuttering, or crashes.
