My best guess is that those drivers weren't meant for a card that old. But I can't say for sure. Creative has a bad reputation for sound card drivers.

Many of us use external USB soundcards with very good results. I myself use the Edirol UA-1EX for LP/tape/MD transcription and recording from FM. The other card that gets mentioned a lot on the forum is the Behringer UCA202. The Edirol is more expensive than the Behringer, but has a few more features (e.g. optical input - which I wanted for MD transfer).

There are cheaper devices, and more expensive devices too - but the two mentioned seem to do the job well.
