Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

draging .aup file into Audacity odd behaviour

Post by stephen_le_page » Thu Dec 10, 2009 2:25 am

When I drag a .doc file into a Word window, Word opens the file.
When I drag a .aup file into an Audacity window, it tells me: Error importing, Audacity did not recognize the type of file '-----------.aup'. If it is uncompressed, try importing it using "Import Raw".

Sometimes I want to close one Audacity project and open another one. With most other applications you can close a file and open another one without closing the whole application down, but with Audacity, for some reason, it's more convenient to exit the whole application and then double-clicking the other project to run Audacity again. Is this desirable for any reason, perhaps from a memory management point of view?

You understand AUP isn't a sound file, right? AUP is a computer program -- a Project manager file whose job it is to keep track of the hundreds of other files that make up your Project (Show).

So that's why it doesn't open as a sound file. I suppose it could be argued that Audacity should certainly know what an AUP file is. It created it. But it doesn't. Further, I've noticed different reactions if I right-click on the AUP file > Open With, and Open Audacity and FIle - Open, although it's been a while since I experienced that.

So I believe that's normal. Which Audacity version do you have?

I know that AUP isn't a sound file. My point was that Audacity doesn't recognise it when you drag it to an Audacity window. It would make sense for it to recognise an AUP file and open it, whether it be launched through double-clicking, right-click and open with... or dragging to an Audacity window.

The drag approach would be useful when Audacity is already running, you've just closed one project, and you want to open another project:
You could use the File Menu Open... command, but then you would probably have to stuff around navigating your directories to find the project.
More likely, you would just double-click the AUP file you want to open, which initialises a new instance of Audacity, scanning and reloading all the plugins, then you have to close the old instance. It's a very minor inconvenience, but it just seems inefficient to have to wait for Audacity to close and then initialise again when dragging the AUP file into the Audacity window could be the most efficient way to load the project. It's also an intuitive GUI thing that we've become accustomed to as well. My $0.02

I am using version 1.3.9 after uninstalling 1.3.10 because of the export selection issue (previously posted.)

<<<1.3.10>>>

Yes, people fell off either direction. Either up to 1.3.11 or down to 1.3.x. I never stopped using 1.3.7, so I'm watching the progress.

I've added your vote. Drag is just treated as equivalent to Import Audio at the moment.

Already fixed in 1.3.11 Alpha.

The alpha one version higher than the current Beta means the Nightly Builds.

As I wrote to the audacity-devel mailing list, http://n2.nabble.com/Export-Multiple-Bu ... l#a4092094
the "nightly" version of Audacity on http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... tly_Builds
is Audacity 1.3.10 alpha Nov. 30th (Unicode) which still has the Export Multiple bug.

I'm aware that the Windows "Nightly" is not necessarily nightly, but it's usually a lot more frequent than "monthly". Has there been a breakdown in the system somewhere?

Indeed, my edit to update Nightly Builds to 1.3.11 Alpha on 2nd December evidently never worked... :? I'm sorry about that, whatever the reason was.

The link is fixed now on the page. The direct URL to 1.3.11 Alpha (which was working all along and is updated whenever there's a code change) is:
http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacity- ... -alpha.zip

Thanks
