Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

What other options do you have for sound input other than "Mac Vide Audio Connector"?

If you go to Audacity > Preferences then click on the Devices option in the list on the left, then click on the drop-down menu for Recording Device, exactly what do you see? http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... references

If you go to Apple menu > System Preferences then click on the Sound icon then the "Input" tab, exactly what do you see in the list of available inputs?

When we have this information then perhaps we can get Audacity recording again for you.

In Audacity's preferences, it says:
Built-in Microphone
Built-in Input
MacVide Audio Connector

I set it to built-in mic, but it always switches back itself.

In System Preferences, it says:

Internal Microphone Built-in Microphone
Line in Built-in Input
MacVide Audio Connector

I begin to see the problem. MacVide Audio Connector is a software download that's supposed to let you establish audio pathways and compression services normal machines do not have. Sometimes it doesn't work so good.

http://www.macvide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26

Did you put this software on your machine?

It should be possible to switch to Built-In Microphone in both panels (restart Audacity) and get your microphone back in service. Same with Line-In.

If your original intention was to record from the internet, then you can download SoundFlower from the Apple web site to do that.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/a ... lower.html

You can get Audacity to convert in and out of the more exotic sound formats with ffmpeg which is also a free download and works inside Audacity.

http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac

Half way down that page.

The light begins to dawn. You have installed the MacVide Audio Recorder application from http://www.macvide.com/ I have never heard of this before. If you have a look on their support forum here: http://www.macvide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=136 you will see that even after you remove "Audio Recorder.app" the "MacVide Audio Connector" sound device is left behind. Apparently MacVide does not provide an uninstaller. If you look at the thread on their forum you will find instructions for removing it from you system, but it is not pretty.

Also look here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=677285

In the meantime try this:
Select your Internal Mic in System Preferences > Sound > Input, then start Audacity and try to set that in Audacity > Preferences > Devices > Recording Device.

If that doesn't work, but the input keeps reverting to MacVide, then the problem is with MacVide and you need to get it off your system.

<<<Strange. I don't remember installing it.>>>

That's a valuable part of the question. I wasn't accusing you of molesting your machine. If you didn't install it, it may have arrived as part of another package. Are you the only human that has access to your machine? We have a "public" machine at work and every so often we have to hose it down.

That's scary, isn't it? Actually this is in the grand tradition of the forum. "I can help the poster before you can!" "No! Me!"

We had one poster walking around with a neck brace because he wasn't used to the sudden acceleration compared to the other forums.

LAFCPUG does OK. They have heavy registered users all over Earth, some from other regional forums. That's my alma mater.

Sounds like you might be in Pause mode. Try clicking the Pause button.

BTW, you really should start a new thread - it helps all of us help you.
