Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Audacity won't record!

Post by Archmaster » Sun Dec 06, 2009 9:16 pm

I have Audacity 1.2.6 on and Intel Mac, Mac OSX 10.5.8. About three months ago, I downloaded Audacity was working fine, and I used it to make a documentary for a school project. Sometime last month, it stopped recording. I have no idea why. My Mac's built in microphone records for other programs like iMovie and Garageband, but when I press record in Audacity, I talk and nothing is recorded. I put the input and output volume to the max, and in preferences I made the recording device Mac Vide Audio Connector.

How can I fix this?

First step: Audacity 1.2 is not supported on newer Macs. That, plus Intel Macs took (at one time) Audacity 1.2.5, not 1.2.6.

So, you should be on one of the Audacity 1.3 versions. The newest version is 1.3.10 from here...

Audacity 1.3.10 is still under hot, active development, so I use a somewhat older 1.3.7 on my Intel Macs from here...

I forgot to mention, I downloaded 1.3.9 too, but that won't record either.

Did you install Skype in between? Skype is famous for taking over sound services and not putting them back.

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. Is that setting still pointed to Built-In Microphone and does the blue ball sound meter jump when you talk?

It was set to Mac Vide Audio Connector. I put set it to input, and no, the blue meter did nothing. How do I fix it?

<<<Intel Mac>>>

What kind of Intel Mac? The Mac Mini does not have a built-in microphone.

Apple > About This Mac > More Info... > Hardware > Hardware Overview > Model Name.

Excellent. We have several of those at work and yes, they do have built-in microphones and will do an iChat session with no troubles.

I can't think of a direction to go. Are you a native English speaker and is your Audacity in English? I need to ask that because you have some very strange symptoms I've never seen before and they could be caused by a "foreign" language installation.

<<<Mac Vide Audio Connector.>>>

There is no Mac Vide Audio Connector. Do you have external production equipment connected to your Mac like maybe a FireWire video capture unit or an external digital audio workstation?

I'm going to have to sleep on this one. Maybe Billw58 will have something.
