Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Can't play exported files in itunes

Post by Murfacet » Fri Dec 04, 2009 9:30 pm

Hey folks, brand-new today on this Audacity forum. Feel free to scold me for not reading, but I have done a fair bit of searching and cannot find my issue, quite. I was so grateful for Audacity, which looked opaque next to Final Vinyl, but really was not, thanks to Audacity how-to's.

I'm on a Macbook Pro running 10.58, dual processor. I want to digitise some LPs to learn songs away from the turntable. I bought a Griffin iMIc to facilitate this, but there's huge hum, irrevocable hum. So now I'm using a cable from the home stereo tuner's headphone jack to the input jack on the Macbook. (This cable is great, and was bought to connect my Strat to Garageband.) With Audacity, I have now recorded successfully some lovely stuff to hard drive (external) and then converted them to Apple-signed 16-bit PCM something or other.

The files exported fine using said AACC (is that right?...it's hard to locate it without making another unnecessary save to see) and imported into iTunes. They play just fine, sound great. But putting those on the iPod nano didn't work, although it appeared to. But with guitar in hand, Nano prodded to play the tune desired, a quick series of numbers flashed--that is, the screen of the nano reads through the "2 of 20, 3 of 20," etc. very rapidly, apparently finding empty files.

What gives? Ought I merely export them as MP3s? But why wouldn't the larger files work, since it was a Mac format? I haven't yet installed the LAME ... it's in the Audacity folder, but not sure it's 'expanded' or unstuffited yet...will do.

Thanks for any help.

Please don't piggy-back new threads such as this on the end of old, un-related or vaguely related threads - I have split this off to form a new thread. Please use the "New Topic" button which you will find on each index page of the forum.

Piggyback postings make us crazy because it's impossible to track the responses.

Anyway...

<<<I'm on a Macbook Pro running 10.58, dual processor.>>>

So that pretty much kills off Audacity 1.2 right there. Newer Macs do not support Audacity 1.2

http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac

You can have 1.2 and 1.3 on your machine as long as you only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open up in 1.2.

When you get that settled, Change Audacity preferences to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo. Restart Audacity. That should take care of the export and import problems.

Thanks for splitting me off, Koz

I kind of thought that might be a problem, though I am not well-versed in such threadiquette (coinage?).

I'll try what you say, and hit 'new post' in future.

I just lost a longer message, and can't bear to repeat it. Suffice to say, I followed your directions, Koz. Turns out I did have 1.3.9. So I posted wrong and also piggybacked--my bads. I set it to 16-bit (had been 32-bit float), and that was the only thing set wrong. Still no luck. Goes to iTunes very well, not so to iPod, but as the others, will be MP3-able, and then I can do so.

thanks for help, anyway.

iPods will or should play almost anything. I believe they will play AIFF or WAV files if you can stand having only twelve songs on your iPod. Chances are they will not play 32-bit floating music. Open the music up in QuickTime Player and Command-I INFO. If it doesn't say 16-bit, then there could be troubles.

Audacity is a terrible converter, so you can get surprises in the format of your show.

In iTunes Preferences, change he CD Import preferences to AAC iTunes Plus. Close Preferences. Now in the main iTunes window Control-Click your music and Create an AAC version. Try importing that AAC format song to your iPod.
