new digital voice recorder

I have a new digital voice recorder, Oympus D 30 which I will be using to record music classes, and then use Audacity to select and then post clips for others in the class to use for practice. I have been using a cassette recorder, lousy sound but worked well with Audacity. The digital recorder comes with software for DSS player, but I would still like to use Audacity for editing. How do I get the files from the recorder into Audacity? When I connect the USB cable with Audacity running, the screen on the recorder says "remote storage" and then nothing happens when I click on record. I would really appreciate any advice.

Close Audacity and get the system to work with Windows Sound Recorder. If you can't get that to work, Audacity will never work. Audacity is standing on the Windows Sound Services.

I wonder if you could try and import the file directly into Audacity. ie. File > Import > {drive name for the USB device} {file name}

Ok I have figured this out, unless there is a simpler way. I download from the recorder to the DSS program (software that came with the recorder), then use Switch to convert it to mp3 format, then import into Audacity. It works!

Congrats.

The down side of doing it that way is that the original "capture" audio may have already been compressed using either MP3, MP4, or one of the newer sound compressors. When you rescued the performance to MP3, you may have double-compressed it. That never sounds very good. Try rescuing it to WAV or other uncompressed format and see if that doesn't sound better.

If it doesn't, then you win as you are. And yes, uncompressed sound files are much larger to get the additional quality. That alone may convince you to ignore the quality difference.

Could you not perhaps play it in another application and then record it via Audacity (using "stereo mix" as the input)? I don't know if that would work or if some audio quality would be lost, but it might be worth a try.
