Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

As Koz says there is click removal in Audacity - but I found that Brian Davies' ClickRepair software worked much better. It costs a little, but is well worth it IMHO.

Koz,
I have just attempted to convert an LP to digital and I cannot get any sound whilst recording.
USB turntable direct to computer. RCA cables hooked up to computer.
I think I had the sound (system prefs) set up but I'm not sure.
Can you help?

You have too many cables connected. Is it a USB turntable? Disconnect the RCA cables and leave the USB. Make sure everything is turned on.

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. Select the turntable or the USB device. The blue lights on the sound meter should flash when you play a record.

Do you get that far? It's not important that the system is silent if it is.

Koz,
I have only the power cable and USB cable connected now.
I'm having trouble with audacity so I tried "golden records" which is very simple to use.
I have the digitized LP to my desktop as an itune which plays okay but there are a few
clicks I would like to remove. I also burnt it to a CD.
Question: Can I use "Click Repair" to remove those clicks on the desktop file?
and will it also work on the CD?

If the desktop file is a WAV file then yes. Note that you can get a 21-day free trial of ClickRepair to see if it works for you

You will need to repair the WAV file with ClickRepair and then burn a music CD with the repaired WAVs

Yes it is a WAV file and I have downloaded the trial version of click repair.
It works okay but you have to experiment with it....I'm still doing that!

I opened the CD and ran it through CR just as with the itune file...it is not a music file BTW.

The PDF is quite comprehensive.

Thanks for your reply, tango5

tango,

if you delve into the thread I posted the link to above in an earlier post in this thread, you should see the settings that I eventually settled on as my default for ClickRepair - done after extensive experimenting and listening tests on good quality eqipment. May save you a bit of time ...

The default seems to be fine for click repair for the average LP but this particular one has lows and VERY highs.
I was reading the audacity PDF and there is a way of fixing that but I will have to read it several times to
really understand it.
This USB stanton turntable is better than most and my headphones are sony dynamic stereo which
were not cheap. My speakers are nothing to rave about but you can pick up the slightest clicks etc.
The learning curve for me is quite steep but I think I'll improve as I go along.

I have finally recorded one side of an LP using audacity.
On playback, it takes about 2 seconds. How do I slow it down to normal?
