Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

can't find folder on PC

Post by rasta3003 » Fri Oct 30, 2009 2:39 am

Hi everyone

I'm using Audacity 1.2.6 and my PC ran out of battery during a record. When I rebooted i answered "NO" when Audacity asked if I wanted to delete the temporary files. I looked under preferences and the program said this was where my temp files was located:

C:DOCUME~1ADMINI~1LOCALS~1Tempaudacity_1_2_temp

but I can't find that directory on my PC. Can someone help me locate and recover this file?

thanks

Those "~1"s in the path name are a sign that the folder names have been abbreviated to fit into an 8-character format.

"Docume~1" is "Documents and Settings"
"Admini~1" is most likely "Administrator"
"Locals~1" is most likely "Local Settings"

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Yes, i know the "1" is an abbreviation, but when I look on my hard drive, i can only find Documents and Settings/Adminstrator. beyond that , there is no Locals~1 folder to look in. this is why I'm stumped. I'm attaching a snapshot of my folder structure.,

thanks

You need to enable viewing hidden files.
From that browser window, click on:

Tools > Folder Options > View"
Enable "Show hidden files and folders"
Also disable "Hide extensions for known file types"

You should not normally use an Administrator account for general use as it creates a significant security risk. Much better to set up a normal "User" (Limited) account and use that for normal work.

Thanks, I'm now able to view the audacity files.

But i don't understand the risks of logging on as administrator. Could you explain that?

thanks

Example -
It's late at night - you've been looking up some stuff on the Internet and now you are about to go to bed. Just before you shut your web browser there is a pop-up window. It asks if you want to buy some special pills. You click "No" to dismiss it, but instead of closing it laughs and deletes your Windows folder.

Limited users can not make system wide changes, so the above (fictitious) scenario can not happen if you are logged in with a limited user account.

It is a ridiculous security flaw that Microsoft made XP have an Administrator account as the default.

See here for how to set up user accounts: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... ounts.mspx
