import and playback of Windows Movie file

Anyone out there using audio clips imported into the computer via Firewire?

I just installed Audacity on a laptop with no line-in connection. In order to record LPs from my turntable, I am taking the amplifier output, sending it to a DV converter device. This box is connected via Firewire to my laptop.

I used Windows Moviemaker to record the LP, using the Firewire connection, and it plays back fine. When I import the clip into Audacity however, and try to play back, it seems to play back at like 5 or 10x real time. Does anyone know what am I doing wrong?

I'm assuming that what you have is a .wmv file with no picture, and Audacity can't make proper sense of it.

Currently, Audacity can only handle Windows Media files in certain cases, though this may improve in the future; see this thread:

You need to convert the file to .wav or one of the other lossless formats that Audacity supports, and there are a number of file converter programs available for this, such as SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html#Dnload) or Switch (http://www.nch.com.au/switch), but I'm not sure if they will all convert .wmv files (assuming that is what you have). I think Switch will do it.
