Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

sound on laptop not working

Post by luvmusic » Tue Oct 06, 2009 2:22 pm

First I had audacity 124 on my desktop computer, (came with the cd with the usb turntable) Windows XP. It was working great until it started to make skipping noises .This would only do it when I would press record. (I use gain +12dB is this why) I defragmented my harddrive and that did not fix the problem. So I got a laptop that has window Vista and installed the 139 (Beta) I can not get no sound to work on my laptop.
1) How do I get my sound to work with audacity to my laptop?
2) How would I fix the skipping on my desktop?
3) If I download a different version on my laptop will that work?
4) Which audacity do I download?
5) Will I lose my files if I download a different version of audacity?

1) using a USB device, like you have, hi-jacks the entire sound services - output as well as input. So to need to reset Audacity (via Preferences) and Windows (via the Control Panel) to target your onboard soundcard fot the output device.

2) I would download 1.3.9 and try that. But this skipping normally occurs when the computer is not fast enough to keep up with the realtime audio capture which is quite intensive on compute power and disk usage. You say you have defragged already - how much space do you have left on the hard drive?

3) Vista seems to give quite a few folks some problems with Audacity - but it can be made to work. See this page in the Wiki: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... s_Vista_OS

4) For preference I would go with the Beta 1.3.9 - despite the dire warnings of "Unstable" and "For advanced users only" the betas are pretty stable now and are approaching release candidate status for the next "stable" release.

5) Basically no - BUT just be aware that you can open a 1.2 project in 1.3 but not the other way around. And once a 1.2 project has been opened in 1.3 and then saved, it then becomes a 1.3 project and can thus no longer be opened in 1.2.

Note: You do not need to remove 1.2.x to install 1.3.x - both can live happily on your macine(s) - but you can't run both at the same time.

OK, I'm trying to help a co-worker...as Audacity apparently is muting his sound even elsewhere in Windows.

At my direction, he downloaded/installed Audacity 1.3.9. He has a laptop with Windows XP Professional, and apparently, a USB sound input device. (Output? I don't know.)

He'll record something in Audacity from his input, and it works, but he hears nothing on playback...even though it looks fine. He also can't hear it if "Software Playthrough" is checked (it acts the same way either way, checked or not, on post-record playback).

He can then get out of Audacity, and all other sounds are muted, from iTunes to system sounds.

He claims that the volume controls look OK, and that nothing is muted in Windows' sound settings.

This is hard for me to troubleshoot, since I haven't actually seen the thing working.

Oh, and one other problem - he apparently got hijacked into downloading what he thought was the 1.2.6 version from one of those AVS4You ads, and got all the AVS4You crap. Why do they put those ads up? They're dangerous! I saw the sticky about the ads, which is why I know about them, but they seem to do more harm than good, particularly if you're roped into them because IE7 hides the "information bar" (?).

So, there's a problem in here somewhere, and I wish I knew how to help my co-worker. He'll bring the laptop into work tomorrow, and hopefully one of the production guys can figure it out...

This is a very common problem on Windows. (note to self - perhaps it should be in the Audacity FAQ).

When you connect a USB audio device to a Windows computer, Windows automatically allocates both input and output to the USB device.
If the USB audio device is an input only device (such as a microphone or turntable) or an output only device (such as headphones or speakers), then it is necessary to go into the Windows Control Panel and in the "Sounds and Audio Devices" section, set the input and output devices to the devices that you want to use.

In Audacity it may then be necessary to go into Preferences (from the Edit menu) and in the Devices section, set the Recording and Playback devices.
