I am tryiing to use an iMac Puma 10.1.5 for the sole purpose of editing music tracks. I have found conflicting information regarding whether or not any version of Audacity can be used on this old computer. Some say can be use on 10.3 and older and some say 10.4 and greater. I have tried using the two versions on the Mac download page, but the dmg files will "not mount".
first, has anyone been able to use OS 10.1.5 for music editing/mastering? If so how? Is there a version of Audacity I don't know about? Is there something in the loading instructions that needs to be revised?
I would really like to make this work, so any guidance would be appreciated.

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Re: iMac Puma 10.1.5
I know 10.3 (Panther) worked, I used to have a G3 iBook that worked just fine. However. Not very many people had anything good to say about 10.1. "Good start. Now when are they going to finish it?" The reviews all featured the words "Buggy" and "Unstable."
Just the fact that the Disk Image (dmg) files won't mount illustrates the problem. There are even some System Level diagnostic tools that don't work in earlier versions of OS-X.
We tell people all the time that Audacity is a complete slave to the computer that's running it. Good luck.

Thanks for the info and perspective. If Audacity won't work on OS 10.1.5, what program did folks use in 2001-2002 on this machine for editing/mastering music?
When 10.1.5 came out, there must have been some music applications that were designed to be used on it. Do you know what they were?
thanks

There's a page with all versions of Audacity: http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/files/.

I am a relatively recent convert to Mac. When Apple brought out OS-X and finally got it to work, all the engineers ran out and bought one. My thousand year old audio production package was and still is Cool Edit 2000 for the PC.
Sorry. You sailed right out of my world.
As a fuzzy philosophical idea, I'm guessing there were no free audio production packages. That's why Audacity was such a big deal.
