Empty audio files after crash, lost saved audio

I'm running audacity 2.4.2 on Mac High Sierra 10.13.6.

I tried amplifying a section of audio and audacity froze. I force quit and re-opened the project, clicked "recover files" and found that all the audio tracks had lost their waveforms. Is there any way to recover these waveforms?

Note: I very frequently save the projects and export audio at each stage I work on them.

I understand crashes are inevitable and that's why I save so often. My main concern is why audacity can't simply revert to a previous saved file after a crash, and instead attempts a "recovery" that instead deletes all my work. Any help here would be amazing.

There are currently two commands that let you save safety copies of a project at various stages.
Save Lossless Copy of Project and Save Compressed Copy of Project
Both these commands keep your current project open and workable on.
If your recovery is not satisfactory or not wanted you can then revert to these alternate earlier versions.

Alternatively you can do similar with Save Project As
This disadvantage of this (for me anyway) is that it closes the current project and leaves the newly named Saved As project in the current open actice project.


For the upcoming 3.0.0 version of Audacity we have tried to provide greater clarity of purpose by removing the two commands Save Lossless Copy of Project and Save Compressed Copy of Project - replacing them with the single command Backup Project. This makes a safety backup copy of the project under a different name and leaves your current project open under its existing name.
