I'm also inclined to suspect the graphics drivers. I've tried and failed to reproduce this on stable 32-bit Gentoo, so I suspect that it isn't a library version cause, but some other difference between the systems.

Hm, now (after some updates) all works OK for me...

- wxGTK-2.8.10.1-r3
- and I've migrated video driver from free (radeon-6.12.2-r1) to proprietary (fglrx-9.7).
