Music recording/ latency

Post by Rickenbacker » Wed Aug 19, 2020 12:00 am

Win 10, Aud. 2.3.2

I realize this is a common problem, but after watching a bunch of videos I think I went & confused myself. Lost now.

Here's my set up: I've got a piano keyboard hooked up directly to the laptop to record a direct signal.
I'm using an audio adapter external stereo sound card with one end as a USB into the laptop & other end as a 1/4" male jack to the keyboard's headphone port.

The tutorials I saw didn't really address this setup. (not sure if it makes a diff')

Something about making the milliseconds a minus number under "Length & End of selection" area...

Be great if someone (esp. if you're a musician/ keyboard player) could point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Are you having a problem?

There is always latency (delay) through the computer. For simple recording a few milliseconds is not a problem... It's going to be minutes, hours, days, before it's played back anyway.

The big issue is if you're monitoring yourself through the computer with a delay as you play the keyboard. If you can split the headphone output or otherwise directly-monitor yourself that solves the big problem.

If you are playing along with a backing-track, you'll need latency compensation to re-align the tracks after recording.

Ok, that worked, but only b/c I was lucky the keyboard had two output jacks. Otherwise, I mighta been screwed. Thanks!
