NO VOLUME

Post by TJB » Mon May 04, 2020 3:37 pm

EVERYTHING WAS WORKING FINE UNTIL TODAY. NOW WHEN I RECORD, THE SOUND VOLUME IS SO LOW THAT IT'S UNUSABLE.

TO RECORD ANYTHING, I HAVE TO YELL INTO THE MIC .... WHEN I ATTEMPT TO RECORD (WITHOUT YELLING), THE RECORDING METER TOOLBAR ONLY RECORDS SOUNDS IN THE SUPER QUIET RANGE OF -57 TO -51 ... AND IT'S SO LOW THAT IT BARELY SHOWS UP ON THE GRAPHIC SOUND TRACK.

HELP, PLS ................. I'M STUCK

Please avoid typing in all upper case.

What sort of microphone are you using?
How is the microphone connected to your computer?
Which version of Audacity?
What settings do you have in the Device Toolbar?
Do you use Skype or other conferencing type software?
Are you sure that Audacity is recording from your microphone and not the laptop's built in mic?

Mic is an MXL BCD-1 dynamic

I use a ProFX6v3 mixer

Mic is connected from the mixer to the computer with USB cable

Using Audacity 2.3.3

Device toolbar shows: MME Line Pro FX 1 (mono) Speakers High Def Audio

No as to Skype

Some further info ... I just yelled into the mic and it barely registered ... RSM measured -61

How much level are you seeing on the mixer's meter?

Do you sound OK when you listen with headphones plugged into the mixer? Do your mixer flashing volume lights light up to at least "0"?

I've also checked all cable connections and rebooted the computer as well.

Like I said earlier, if I yell into the computer it will register SLIGHTLY on the track and when I ran a RSM check on that section, it showed RSM at -61

Still having same problem. When I record, it's barely visible on the sound track ... and I mean barely !!! Makes it difficult to use.

On the Recording Tool Bar it only hits on 54 to 48 ... even if I yell into it.

But i was able to record a chapter, then did the Mastering (filter curve, RMS Normalize, Limiter and Hum removal) with the following results:
Peak 3.5 Passed ACX
RMS 20.6 Passed
Noise -58,5 Failed
Then applied Noise Reduction with following results:
Peak 3.3 Passed
RMS 20.8 Passed
Noise 66.5 Passed

I think what concerns me is that just two days ago, following the same scenario above, my noise level was in mid to low 70's and I have a hunch that this difference is somehow related to lack of volume DURING the recording.

Any thoughts or suggestions ???
