Hey, I recorded a stream of a song with Audacity, but when I listen to the recording, it's really bassy. I want the recording to sound exactly like the stream. Is there a way to do this?
I have the mixer toolbar set to "Stereo Mix" and have turned down the volume on my PC, but it just makes the song quieter and doesn't really help.

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I use Total Recorder for the PC to capture streaming internet shows--or anything I can hear, basically. It's simple and I can schedule it to record stuff when I'm not here.
Failing that, you have to grapple with Windows Sound Services.
There's an Audacity Wiki that may help.

You almost certainly are trying to record two different sound pathways at the same time (easy to do in Windows) and the combination is canceling out all the high frequencies. The solution changes with the Windows Version. Good luck.

Hey Koz, that Total Recorder looks good for $17.95 - http://www.totalrecorder.com/
Before reading your post I did not know such a thing existed. To record streaming audio I use a cable with stereo jack plugs at both ends. One end goes into the headphone output on my PC's external speaker system, and the other end goes into Line-In on sound card - so Audacity can record from that input.
I get good sound quality, but the bass level adjustment on the external speaker system is in the sound path. If that knob is turned up too high then the recording will be "really bassy".
