Switching monitoring on or off while recording – possible?

Help for Audacity on macOS.

Switching monitoring on or off while recording – possible?

macOS 10.14.6 (18G3020), Audacity 2.3.3.

Is it possible to switch monitoring on or off while recording? Unfortunately, you cannot open the Preferences during the recording to activate or deactivate playthrough.

Here turning down the playback volume is not an option, because then nothing can be heard in other programs. For example button would be helpful, if you want to record vinyl in the background and briefly activate a monitoring function to check how far the recording has progressed.

Or is there something like this already in Audacity that I have overlooked so far?
