hey gang- so im rather new to working with audacity. i've been transfering old 12" from the 1980's over to digital and i've figured out how to work the Boost Bass effect but i can't for the life of me figure out how to chill out the treble and the capping out on the letter "S" and "T" that comes. i'm having difficulty figuring out how to give the vocals a more rich, stereo sound instead of this really trebeled-out sound where the "S" and "T"'s become distorted. any suggestions? i'm sure you know what I'm talking about...

What it seems like is that your turntable isn't giving you enough bass or you've got the gain turned up so high that it's distorting the audio. If the turntable is in normal working order and you're not recording at too high a level, you shouldn't have to use any bass boosts or any other effects to get it sounding right. (except maybe noise removal and / or fade in/out).

Mike, you aren't just plugging a normal record deck straigh into your PC are you? If that is the save then you won't be getting the RIAA equalisation - and hence you would expect to lose bass. If that is the case then you need to plug your deck into a pre-amp or amp with a "Phono" socket - it is only phono sockets that have circuitry to apply the RIAA.
And follow alatham's advice.
