Optimize settings in Audacity for digitizing some cassette tapes

Hi there,
I have a bunch of old cassette tapes of my Mum singing, circa 1980’s I am in the process of digitizing them for posterity. I started this project 6 months ago and had to stop half way through. I am now back on it, but it has occurred to me that when I was doing this before, I did not really mess about with any of the settings in Audacity in an effort to optimize the output audio, and that it might be an idea to ask someone whether I need to do so. When I was doing this before I simply hooked up a cassette deck to my laptop using a red and white RCA to jack cable, I hit play on the cassette deck, record in Audacity and that was about it. I don’t know the in’s and out’s of the Audacity software which is the reason I left well alone 6 months ago, but if anyone could give some bits of advice on what I could do to improve the digital audio output when doing this task I would be very grateful.
