Audacity want open on Catalina

Post by Griffot » Sun Jan 12, 2020 9:53 am

After years of using Audacity for editing I can no longer even open the latest version on Catalina 10.15.2.

"Audacity can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software." This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

The message then mentions www.fosshub.com where I downloaded the latest version.

Any ideas, or is Audacity giving up on Mac? Any help would be much appreciated.

Not yet, though Apple has made it more difficult for software developers that don't sell through Apple Store. The workaround for running Audacity 2.3.3 on Catalina is here: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=107162

The next Audacity release (2.4.0) which is due out in a few months, should fix this problem.

Thank you but that only addresses the microphone problem. My problem is that it won't let me open Audacity at all. (See attached)

This is what I do:

When I first tried launching Audacity, I got a message saying that Audacity could not be opened because the author could not be verified.

To fix that,

I used "control + click" on the icon in the dock, and then selected "open".
When prompted, I confirmed that I wanted to run Audacity
Then I quit Audacity

After doing that, the terminal command to run Audacity now works.

THank you but that doesn't work for me. The Audacity icon bounces in the dock it is therefore not available.

I can't control+click the bouncing icon in the dock. As the warning attachment said 'Audacity can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software'.

I'm surprised that there are so few Mac users using Audacity. If there were there would be a lot more noise about this problem. I didn't realise it was primarily a Microsoft program. I guess its a lost cause which is a shame because it's a great editing facility.

Reboot your computer so that when it has booted, the icon is not bouncing.
Now "control + click" on the icon.
Then select "open".
You may need to confirm that you want to "run it anyway" (I don't recall exactly what it looks like, but there's an option to confirm that you want to run Audacity).

Thank you again.

It's working. It opened, not exactly as you said but pretty close. It appears to be doing everything it used to do.

A very appreciative thank you from down under.

Perhaps you could fill in the gaps and correct my description.
