CHANGING VIEW WHEN GENERATING SILENCE

Post by Luvey19 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:11 am

When editing LP recordings I work in 'Normal View'. I like to generate silence between tracks as this gets rid of any clicks or noise not already removed.
Every time I 'Generate Silence' the view changes automatically to the 'Fit in Window' view. I then have to zoom in or out to get back to where I was working
in 'Normal View'. How can I stop the 'view' size from changing automatically? Help please!!!

Instead of doing that, you might consider selecting the portion between the songs and Edit > Silence Audio. That doesn't change the time between songs and it doesn't zoom out. I think that's also a hot key unlike the generators.

The zoom thing is a result of a very painful programming tradeoff and they're still not entirely sure how they're going to get around it.

After Generating Silence, Press Control-E and then Control-3. Zoom To Selection and Zoom Out A Little.

Assuming that you want to create the same amount of silence each time...

1) select the place for the first bit of silence and generate silence
2) Ctrl+E (zoom to selection)
3) Ctrl+3 (zoom out a bit) - alternatively if you have a wheel mouse you can use Ctrl+wheel.
4) Ctrl+C (copy the selected silence)
5) Move to the next place for inserting silence and press Ctrl+V (paste)
6) Repeat step 5 as required.

Thanks for the advice guys. Will try both these ideas - I'm sure one will suit me just fine. :D

Every time I 'Generate Silence' the view changes automatically to the 'Fit in Window' view. I then have to zoom in or out to get back to where I was working in 'Normal View'.
So, this is normal behavior? I just recorded a podcast and realized that I left out a news item. I went to the place I wanted to insert and generated 60 seconds of silence. It inserted the silence and changed to 'Fit in Window' view.

Is there some other way I can insert without changing the view? I think I might have figured it out:

1. Record the piece you want to insert on a separate track.
2. Select and copy that piece.
3. Position the cursor where you want to insert.
4. Paste.

Hmmm. I thought I remembered that pasting over the following audio, which I didn't want, but it seems it works now. Maybe I was doing something wrong before. Luvey19, thanks for bringing this up.

Okay, that was aggravating.

I did what I said, having tested it before I posted, and this time it had different results.

1. I recorded the piece I wanted to insert. It recorded on a separate track, as expected.
2. I selected and copied (Ctrl-C) that piece.
3. I positioned the cursor where I wanted to insert the new audio.
4. I used Ctrl-V to paste.

It pasted in, but the view changed to a zoomed-in view.

Not only that, the label track didn't move exactly with the amount I pasted in. (Close, but not exactly.) I thought that labels were attached to the audio, and I thought that meant that if I pasted in a 1.1-second piece of audio, then the label would move out by exactly 1.1 seconds. That didn't seem to happen.

I'm new to this and maybe I did something wrong without realizing it, but I thought I'd mention it in case others have had the same experience.

<<<It pasted in, but the view changed to a zoomed-in view.>>>

If you inserted a very large clip, it just stayed where it was, seeming to zoom in, but not really. You can easily zoom in, out, and stages in between with Control-F (zoom full), Control-E (zoom to selection) and Control 1, 2, 3.

I think the labels are connected to time, not the show. It's good to put those in last. To avoid much of this label business, you should probably construct your show on separate timelines one above the other. This is the music track and this is the voice track and this is the interview track. In Audacity 1.3, it's Track > Add New Track.

That lets you push one track earlier and later and apply effects and volume control without affecting anything else. Inserting a new clip should move everybody later the same amount.

When you Export As WAV, Audacity will mix the whole thing down to one Stereo show.

Labels do a few unexpected things in 1.3.9 and earlier - there are significant improvements in 1.3.10 alpha.
