If you are using an Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB, make sure to put the vinyl player in Line mode as opposed to Phono... At the back of the vinyl player there is a small switch. I was having the same issue, a flat line recording even with the terminal work-around. Switch to Line mode and open the app through the teminal code. It worked for me on Catalina 10.15.2
