type crt+N
drag an MP3 into Audacity
* Click File then Click 'export as Ogg'
* in the little window that appears where you chose where to save the song write a name for it, then Click ok.
* the tag editor automatically [here, i haven't ticked 'don't show this again' ] appears,
*see that your previously saved 'set default' is not there [problem 1].
In my case, the imported MP3 had metadata, so the metadata replaced Audacity's default metadata, as expected.

*as an aside [problem 2], now try to save another Template as default [ Click 'set default' then Click 'Ok'
I am assuming that this is while the Metadata Editor is still open from the previous step. Correct me if that's not what you meant.

= 'set default' is not saved.
It is saved.
If I open the file in a media player, I see the metadata that I set as the default.
If I open the Metadata Editor in the Audacity project ("Edit menu > Metadata") I see the metadata that I set as the default.
If I press "Ctrl + N", then "Edit menu > Metadata" in the new project, I see the metadata that I set as the default.
If I "Exit" Audacity ("File menu > Exit (Ctrl+Q)") and then restart Audacity and open the Metadata Editor ("Edit menu > Metadata"), I see the metadata that I set as the default.

yes while the Metadata Editor is still open just before clicking OK to save the song. and it'is in this case that 'set default' is not saved at all, but anyway it doesn't matter if it were saved because:
If the imported file has no metadata, then my template is there.
i wrote before [checked in Foobar etc] that even if an MP3 has no tags, the same happens [saved template is not shown]
I'm done repeating myself here, say i'm the one in mistake, whatever.
Gotta go, bye.
